There are so many shoulder rest and they go on several different ways.
Most will fit from side to side at the widest point of the violin.
Hope that helps
If not you may have to wait until your next lesson.

If it’s a standard shoulder rest…
Turn your violin upside down, so you’re facing the back. Put the scroll “head of the violin” facing your left, so the body is facing the right. Take your shoulder rest and hold it vertically parallel to the violin so that the grooved in part is facing forward. Start at the back of the instrument (your left) and slide the shoulder rest onto the violin. It should rest solidly on the back of the instrument.
