What age range should I teach piano lessons?

September 6th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I’ve taken piano lessons for about 5 years and I’ve been playing for almost 10 years now. I’ve learned from Alfred’s Basic Piano from 1A-Level 5. I’m just a 19 year old trying to earn some extra money.
How young should the kids be that I try to teach? Also, what about adults?

I’m thinking of teaching from Alfred’s Basic since I’m familiar with it.

I think $15 is fine

      I think 8-10 years old.

Not adults… sorry but I think you need to be a little older for adults.

      Maybe seniors!

Since you are new at it I wouldn’t recommend taking on any kids younger than 5. Adults should be fine as long as long as they’re comfortable learning from someone younger than them. I had this problem a few times. I use A Dozen a Day because I learned from it, so you should definitely use what you know. I’m not sure where you live but the going rate is generally $10-15/half hour. Good luck.

finish your own lesson books before teaching anyone else, you still have a book to go in alfred. good luck making $15 when you aren’t done learning your lesson books yet - I have a college music degree and don’t charge that much
