Hi Joey:
While I love the sound of a Fender P-Bass, I find them very limited as to the styles you can play with them, as to me they are mainly suited for blues, and southern and classic rock. While I believe the P-Bass Deluxe has the P-Style body and pickups, with the Jazz Neck, im not to big of a fan of active electronics. I do a ton of recording, and find active basses to be a pain in the you know what to record. Plus, never know when a battery is going to take a dump on you, or the wiring for that matter! In the price range your in, I would suggest at least trying the Fender Jazz Bass. I feel there are tons more tonal possibilities from the bass itself, and, the neck is super fast and easy to play.
Another brand I would recommend in that price range would be the Peavey Grind NTB. Passive pickups, (humbuckers), neck through body construction, and a ton of low end, punch, growl, bite.. you name it, this bass can deliever the sound.
Hope this has helped, and KEEP PLAYIN!
