An eq pedal is good for boosting certain frequencies - for instance, say you would like a solo boost but your rhythm sound is too bassy to just add a gain boost, an eq pedal will allow you to boost and cut certain frequencies to make your lead sound cut through more.

A compressor is used to even out the tone, allowing you to really boost your gain and giving you a super fat tone without killing people.
