What would be a good electric bass for a beginner to buy?

I have not played any instrument before, but I want to learn to play the bass guitar. I like indie and post-punk revival rock. What would be a good, inexpensive brand or model for a beginner to play for this style of music?
I like bands like the Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Razorlight.
Do different guitars make sound different. If they do, I would like to get one with the style of the bands I mentioned above.

      I learned on a C-series, but they are pretty buddy. If you have the $$ and want a good one. Can't go wrong, Lemmy of Motorhead uses one.
